I don't come from a faith background where it was normal to give up something for Lent. Our church focused on special Bible studies, preparation and reflection. I've given up things a few times - the worst was coffee when I was working at Starbucks (note: that was as much free coffee as I wanted). My birthday always falls during Lent - so I can't give up sugar or sweets or any of my favorite foods because it would be a lousy birthday celebration.
A couple weeks ago at chapel, they talked about choosing joy- which is no easy thing when you work at an organization that deals with many of the most awful parts of life- babies with malnutrition. Death from preventable disease. Refugees. IDPs. Natural disasters. Human rights violations. etc. etc. etc.
So, instead of giving-up something for Lent, I'm choosing something... Joy!! I'll do a joy post everyday during Lent.
(gotta catch up for a few days...)
Ash Wednesday - My mom! Who surprised me by dropping off Valentine's day flowers and chocolate at my apartment!
Thursday February14th - Great friends in my small group who I get together with every week to chat, pray and laugh with.
Friday February 15th - Pay day! I have a job that pays for my needs, and the occasional want
Saturday February 16th - The front door of my apartment building had a key broken off in the doorknob for 2 days, so we had to go around to use the back door. I was grumbling, carrying my groceries when as I approached the back door I saw a bright green hummingbird! I love hummingbirds and I rarely ever see them at my place.
And... after dinner dance parties with the kiddos at M&S's house
