Sumptuous Living

"Sumptuous living" is one of the funny things Patricia's Landscape Architecture professor liked to say during her quarter studying in Rome. They toured many extravagant villas and private gardens during those three months. But it's always been kind of a joke with us since then, and we tend to say it when we think things are a bit too much.Well, I think I've tasted a bit of that sumptuous living.

I decided to stop at Chocolati on my way home from work tonight. It's one of my favorite coffee shops- that has the best hot chocolate anywhere. I almost didn't stop as it was literally too cold to get out and walk around. The kind of cold where you're muscles tense up and you walk like a robot. That was me.

But I decided if there was ever a day for hot chocolate, this was it. So I went in to order my 12 oz hot chocolate, when I spotted the gingerbread man. I LOVE gingerbread cookies! So I had to order the cookie. She nicely packed up my cookie and handed me my delicious beverage, then said, "Oh, and the gingerbread cookie is $5, is that okay?"

Inside my head: What! You wrapped up everying for me all nice and pretty, and now you tell me five dollars, did you freaking say $5 for a cookie??!!

Of course I was so shocked, I kind of said, "Oh that's fine."

Honestly, if you know me, I would NEVER spend $5 for a cookie! It wasn't even like it was a cookie as big as my head, just a regular size cookie! As I was walking out, the correct response came to me... 20 seconds too late as they always are. What I should have said was, "Wow! So tell me, does this cookie taste like it's worth $5?" But no, I walked away with a hot chocolate and a cookie for $8.

My next thought was, maybe the sales girl thought that I was a big spender and paying $5 for a cookie was nothing, like I would do that all the time! Ah yes, that must be what sumptuous living is like.

Just for the record, it tasted like a $2.99 cookie.

Wow, you have some major self discipline to wait to eat the cookie until you got home and took your gorgeous photo:) Looks like a sumptuous & scrumptious cookie. Oh, the good life.

Hi there - well I obviously am not reading your blog often enough, since I just read the $5 cookie story. Wowzers. Despite the cookie price-gouging, I'd love to make a trip to Chocolati again with you sometime soon! Missing you and Happy New Year! Love, jen L.
